Bamako(Destination)
Portray of the Destination
The city of Bamako is cosily situated in an escarpment surrounded by attractive hills. This pure African city stretches 22km east to west and 12km north to south, running a total of 267km along the banks of the River Niger, also known as Djoliba in Mali (“the river of blood).

Originally named Bammâko (“alligator creek” in the Bambara language), Bamako was founded by the Niaré dynasty (formerly known as Niakate) at the end of the 16th century. Niaréla, the district of Niaré, is one of the oldest districts in Bamako. In 1904, the Dakar-Niger railway line was opened, and the building of the city's hospital, located on the Point G hill, began the following year. The cathedral was built in 1927, followed by the “House of Crafts” in 1931. In 1947, the first bridge over the River Niger was constructed. The Grand Mosque of Bamako was built the following year.

On November 18th 1955, Bamako became an official town in its own right, and its first mayor, Modibo Keïta, was elected on November 16th of the following year. Mali declared independence on September 22nd 1960, and Bamako became the capital of the new republic. Nowadays the city hosts a range of national and international cultural festivals, including the biannual festival African Photography Encounters and the Bamako International Percussion Festival.
