San Cristóbal Hill This is the highest peak in Santiago, 800 meters (2624 feet) above sea level. The hill has been
worshipped since the first natives' times, when they called it "Cerro Tupahue", which means "God
Place". Its present name has been given by Pedro de Valdivia, Spanish conqueror. On the San
Cristóbal Hill (which is part of the Metropolitan Park) the sanctuary devoted to Saint Mary
Immaculate is found, with a magnificent statue of the Virgin Mary, which can be seen from different
points in the city. The statue was granted by the French government and it is now a symbol. The top
can be reached by funicular and cable car, enjoying the beautiful panoramic view. At the foot of
the San Cristóbal Hill you will find the Metropolitan Zoo (Zoológico Metropolitano).
