Portray of the Destination
Campeche is a state with deep historical roots. The territory that is now known as Campeche was
occupied by the Maya, who flourished and eventually declined there (The Mayan region stretched more
than 500,000km² over the south-east of Mexico and Belize.) The Mayans were known through fantastic
chronicles and stories told by travelling groups, explorers and lovers of Mexican archaeology.
The Historical Centre of Campeche was built Renaissance style and designed in the form of a “
chess board”, in accordance to the specifications of the Spanish Monarch. On the square closest to
the sea, the central park and main town square was built; though it was built for the people of the
community, this square was used by the town elite, Spanish royalty and political authority for
parties and ceremonies. The buildings surrounding the square include government administration
offices, the cathedral, the Mexican Navy offices, Customs and the houses of the most influential
conquerors. You can feel the presence of Campeche´s history when you stroll through the historical
downtown streets. Since parts of the old fortress walls still remain, the legacy of pirates,
conquerors and 19th century civil war can be felt in the atmosphere.
Nowadays, thanks to its competitive and diverse opportunities, the economy of Campeche has
been greatly boosted by tourism, attracting thousands of tourists year after year. The state has a
wide range of hotels, restaurants, and travel agencies as well as museums, attractions and other
services essential for a memorable visit. The warm welcome and genorosity of Campeche and its people
are without a doubt the necessary ingredients for an unforgettable stay.
