Portray of the Destination
Ziguinchor is the capital of the picturesque region of Casamance, and of the adminstrative region
of Ziguinchor, Senegal.
Situated in the south-east of Senegal and bordering the River Casamance, some 70km from the
Atlantic Ocean, this city has traditional Senegalese history and roots, yet with a touch of France.
Its narrow, winding streets, fields of palm trees and beautiful town houses are just waiting to be
discovered. Furthermore, its friendly people invite you to discover the real life of Senegal with
all its beauty.
Founded in 1645 by the Portuguese, Ziguinchor was sold to France in 1888, becoming a major
hub of commerce and administration in the region. The region is famous for its peanut trade and oil
production; these are the most important trades in Casamance, generated around 90% of its gross
product.
